Patriot Marines Helping Search For SGT Matthew Maupin

July 28th, 2006 by Patriot

Matthew Maupin is the only servicemember still missing in Iraq from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Maupin has been missing since April 9, 2004. There are few military names that we should have in our prayers, but SGT Maupin should be chief among them, along with Navy Capt. Michael Scott Speicher who went missing during the first Gulf War and deceased Army SFC Paul Ray Smith, the only Medal of Honor recipient from OIF combat.

We don't leave our own. The way in Iraq may end and the majority of us will come home, but the United States military NEVER leaves its own behind. Every day there are soldiers across the globe scouring the jungles of Vietnam and the beaches of Normandy looking for a glimpse of hope for the families of missing troops. Not many people realize it, but there is an active and ongoing search for Matt to this day.

The Marines are helping full time in the search for our soldier.

Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Steven J. Nesbit, a 49-year-old from Green Bay, Wisc., watches as Marine engineers scrape away earth a site Marines, soldiers and British soldiers searched for signs of remains of Army Sgt. Keith M. Maupin. Maupin went missing after his convoy was attacked in April 2004 and was seen in insurgent videos. Insurgents claimed to have killed him and lef thim in a grave, but grainy videos were never verified. This is the second time soldiers for Mutli-National Corps Iraq's Personnel Recovery Detachment came to Regimental Combat Team 5's area to follow leads in the search for Maupin.

A team of Marines, U.S. Army and British soldiers fanned out across several sites to search for the remains of the soldier missing for more than two years. The team searched in two separate locations in this town north of Fallujah. Marines from 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment assisted in the search.

With the Marines in the hunt, SGT Maupin's future is in good hands (blatant suck-up to CPL M since he handles our tech issues).

I am so glad you wrote this post. Many people do not realize the extent of effort put into bringing "all" our troops home. When we say, "leave none behind, we mean leave none behind!"
