Having read all of the post, it would seem that few have no understanding of the term "Sheep Dog". And of course there are those that go to the "Bible Thumping" mode, as they have no concept of what prevails.
So to cut to the chase, A SHEEP DOG, does not confront to destroy, but will continue to circle the sheep to keep them protected, which is that if sheep wander, then of course the Wolf will seek out the singles and destroy. So it then requires the "Sheep Dog" to bring the Sheep back safely to the flock, by whatever means is needed, but not in excess.
That said, this is what our Guy's are doing to protect the shores of the USA, they are on a constant circling of the borders (sheep flocks), but from the exteriors.
The necessity of weapons has been present since the time God died on the cross, and HE has and did charge all to help there fellow mankind. Is this not then what the Soliders are doing, yes they are charged, by Gods command to protect there fellow man, but most think that this is by words alone, nay I say, times have changed, and we the sheep have asked that we are protected.

As an old now retired sheepdog, I'm proud to have served, regret the bad and rejoice in the good we did. I pray and cry for the young puppies protecting us today. Hard to believe I was that young too chasing and killing wolves. Never killed one that didn't need killing. I'm just grateful now to be able to share my thoughts and my pride of the young and not-to-old sheepdogs serving our country and protecting our butts today. God Bless you and protect you where ever our leadership sends you. Amen.

I don't wear a badge and I am ashamed to say that I have never served my country in any capacity other than a voter and tax payer, so many may think that I am not deserving of a voice in this discussion. But here goes.
Sheepdogs are not entitled to choose which sheep they protect. Nor do they want to choose. A true American sheepdog protects even the bigmouth sheep who does not know how lucky he is to have a sheepdog taking care of him. being a sheepdog is a thankless job that is only rewarding by knowing you are making the world a safer place, even for the bigmouth ungreatful sheep.
Thank you to all of the sheepdogs out there who protect me and mine from the wolves.

There is one critter you need to include in Lt. Dave Grossman analogy: Parasites.

Parasites feed on sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. They are not picky on who the feed on. They need a bloodsucking relationship with any of the sheep, wolves, or sheepdogs. They are weak in nature and must attach themselves to other organisms.

They are deceptive and never reveal their true nature. Just like they are hard to find and identify once inside a host. They will use sheep, sheepdogs, or wolves in any means possible only to gain something from it.

They are people like George Bush Jr. and Dick Cheney (many politicians) who have never seen the outside of the real world and has always lived inside a shelter environment like inside a host.

They have never served in the armed forces or have bled. They know nothing of fangs but yet talks about it or even tries to use fangs (gun.) When allowed to use fangs they are dangerous to everyone else (Cheneyâ€™s duck hunt.)

They consider themselves the master and will try to control the host in anyway possible so they can live another day from the richness (blood) of an organism that is working hard to stay alive. They will eagerly infect your friends (pack) or offspring by spreading their offspring (lies) by laying eggs. Their offspring are not selective either and will attach themselves to a sheep or wolf too.

So as an intelligent sheepdog, donâ€™t just protect any sheep. Protect the sheep that are not infected by the parasites and make sure you are not infected as well.

Donâ€™t fight a misguided war in Iraq or Afghanistan so that the parasite can benefit from the bloodshed for oil.

This is a great essay and the ones that disagree do not know what they are talking about. You are the sheep's the bleeding heart liberals that will die when stuff starts to go down. Then you will be begging the real men to come save you. If this is wrong then will one of you tell me another category that he does not talk about.
