Admin Open Question

October 20th, 2008 by Admin

I've made a conscious effort with this site to be completely independent of the appearance of a commercial enterprise. However, lately I've been thinking about how I can make a bigger difference by either obtaining non-profit status for the site or selling ad space on the sidebar, much like Blackfive does. This would put less of a burden on me and you, the readers, when projects come up to raise money for troops charities or projects. With all the increased traffic lately, now seems like a good time to raise this question. I value your opinion greatly and would like your thoughts on how this would affect you as a reader if at all. If you would rather not comment publicly, feel free to send me and Marcus an email.

Hmm. An interesting proposition, but I think it's tough to rake in the cash unless you are a site with monster traffic (like 100K a day). I'd be interested to see how it goes…if you wouldn't mind sharing your revenue.

Whoops. That comment sounds weird, I meant discolosing how much revenue you make off the ads, not giving me money because Obama is going to get elected and the redistribution of wealth should apply on this blog.

Google ads are good, although I don't have the stats. Rightvoices uses them. A funny by-product is that Google (and others) use the content of the page to attempt to feed relevant ads. On Rightvoices.com, you see a post of someone bashing Obama (an atrocity in my mind) and then one of his campaign ads flows through right near it.
Non-profit status may entail a lot of overhead in terms of record keeping to make it worthwhile. I've held off on doing that for my computer project.
    Best of Luck,
    NY-David

Yeah I havee no problem with a few ads

Like what David said I think you can sign up to google or whatever and they could hook you up or something. It's possible I just don't know exactly how

CJ ~ I think it's a great idea. While I really don't like ads I know they money will all go to great projects so…a few – or a lot – of advertising won't be a bother.

CJ, I wouldn't mind the ads a bit (as long as they aren't the pain in the butt pop-ups ). And, I would even go along with those as long as it helps!

I think the ads would be much easier than non-profit status.

    My two cents,

    CJ,
I think whatever is best for you is what you should do. Personally I wouldn't mind the ads either. Hope they help!

  9. Terri says:

CJ, we've been having the ads in the sidebar at ASM for awhile now and it doesn't seem to cause a problem. Might as well give it a try and see how it goes.

  10. Ads are fine, but it seems what is really needed is for our congressmen to be informed about what our soldiers need in the field. I have worked for years to get congressmen to look into the likely need for more funding for the Commander's Emergency Response Program. I've had very little luck. I have had very little luck getting other private citizens help me lobby for such funds. It's nice for citizens to contribute to the needs of the troops. That doesn't relieve congress of its need to fund the troops. This is more important than any money you could give them that would be raised by selling ads.
