The Battle Is Won
October 2nd, 2009 by CJ
I got an email from the district supervisor about the school uniform issue. The school has reversed course and will not make uniforms mandatory this year. However, they will be mandatory next year.
While this is a great win, it's not the end of the problem. Parents and students still were not consulted about whether we even WANT uniforms! And while I'm ambivalent about school uniforms, I still want the ability guaranteed to me by school policies and U.S. Code as a parent. Major decisions that affect my children directly MUST occur with our input.
We do not work for the government! We do not work for the school system. I refuse to be disrespected and my parental right discarded by a principal out of control! This is a great win, but it's not over yet!
We're going to Dairy Queen to celebrate!

School Victory = Peanut Buster Parfait!!!!
Way to fight the good fight – you & wifey are awesome!!!
I am against school uniforms in PUBLIC school in general.
My taxes pay for that school. My taxes pay for the school's personnel. I will send my kid dressed any way I want to. Of course, I'm going to send my kid there clean, and with decent clothes. After all, I do have some pride. But forcing me to buy specific clothing for something that I am BY LAW required to do (sending children to school is the law, after all), screams all kinds of rights violations in my head.
Private schools can have all the uniforms they want. After all, they're not publicly funded by my taxes.
CJ, if you had the time and ability, I would consider homeschooling. My sister has 5 kids that she's home schooled. Her oldest is now a freshman at Yale.
Our school put the matter up to the Parent's Association and got it to be optional. The only complainers were the parents that don't come to the meetings.
I agree with Bob that there isn't much benefit at the public level for this. In NYC, I'd rather them focus on keeping weapons out of the school then what the kids wear.
