CJ Langley High Teaches Revisionist History
March 25th, 2010 by CJ

One would think the above image is being used in Code Pink or MoveOn ads. It's perfect for a leftist protest sign on the steps of the nation's capitol. But, it isn't being used by any liberal, leftist group – unless you consider the Fairfax County School District the liberal, leftist organization it is.
Langley High School in McClean, VA, is studying the Depression. As part of their curriculum, this image was shown to students during a "graded discussion" on how McDonald's is trying to take over the world. The insinuation is that service members are in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting for McDonald's to have the ability to sell their delicious Big Macs and Quarter Pounders w/ Cheese. By the way, this comes on the heels of a WWI discussion focused on how the war divided the African American community and oppressed women.
The Principal of Langley High School is Matt Ragone and you can let them know how you feel by calling 703-787-2700. School should NOT be a breeding ground for brainwashing and idiotic stupidity and ignorance. It should be a place of learning history, not spin and rhetoric. Make your opinions known and flood the Principal with your thoughts. You also email him at matthew.ragone@fcps.edu.

As my Father was a Marine on this hell hole when the flag was raised I will be sure to express my great displeasure.
The SDS has sunk to a new low and its time to pump the septic tank.
[...] has contact information on ASP if you so feel inclined to contact the school in an attempt to put a stop to the English [...]
This is horrific and despicable. You can count on me to send this all over and let Ragone know that he has taken his school to a new low!

My Father and my former Husband fought for America in WWII and Vietnam respectively. I'm pretty sure McDonald wasn't even a dream of anyone yet, when my Father was on a B-17 with thw 8th Air Force Bloody 100th Bomb Group. This hippi clown needs to gain the proper perspective of History. As for his entire perspective seems clouded in his hatred of America. I think Hugo Chavez has an opening for principles that will tow the party line. The door to America swings both ways Comrade.

This is ridiculous. Don't blame liberals on this one. Blame stupid people. I would never spit on the sacrifice our grandfathers made like that.
Dont blame liberals? Why not? Progressive/Liberalism is what has corrupted the educational systems and downgraded them to socialist indoctrination centers. It is the lefties that have rabidly attacked capitalism and our military for decades. Examples of the liberal attitude are abundant, this is just one the latest.
If you find this incident repulsive then rethink calling yourself liberal.
I do blame stupid people, liberal is a sub-category of stupid.
So I'm stupid?
If you want to start slinging insults, take it somewhere else. I won't disrespect CJ, Marcus and the others like that.
Bob please understand you offer a counter point but defending.."All Liberals" and the impact on public education is a dog that will not hunt here and if you so love our Wounded Warriors contact me on facebook at "Laptops for Wounded Warriors" and I will be glad to accept your donation to present a laptops to them.
PS Bob we do not ask them what their political point of view may be..without regard to PC BS we love each of them.
The ball is in your court Bob, Have a great day and remember you are just another actor in everyone elses play.
I'll add that to my facebook in a few minutes. And I'll send a donation next week. This week is a little short. One of the wife's medical bills came in.
Welcome to the Gathering of Eagles Laptops for Wounded Warriors Missions Bob.
CJ will himself be presenting laptops at Fort Hood Tx..also laptops will be presented at Fort Bragg NC & Fort Goedon Ga. Spread the word and rest assured all Liberals who support our troops are welcome..Just leave the political BS for another time and place.
If I seem a little harsh in my comments it is in part due to the fact I speak for 58, 473 of my Vietnam Brothers and Sister who live on holy ground at our Vietnam Wall.Liberals and conservitives fought and died together Bob and I will not attack anyone who shows the proper respect and support to our brave Warriors.
I also have a personal facebook..search for George Samek, you will find CJ at both.
Oh, just remember this…
Liberals were the ones who pushed through the Civil Rights Acts of the 1960's.
Think on that.
Please Bob,get a grip on the edges of this comment line. We are speaking of our military and Big Macks at McDonalds, we do not need your updates on the civil rights movement.
I have no time to play in the septic tank with you and if you have a problem with my post here just suck it up and put on your big boy britches and pander the liberal point of view over at IVAW..MoveOn.Org and Media Matters.
MoveOn.org are idiots. I send their emails to spam. They act as if they know the issues, but they don't.
I do not communicate with the Brain Dead Bob, waste of time and may Wizz be upon them all.
PS I vote for the content and charactor of the person and support them here in Brunswick County NC.
Statement on civil rights is incorrect. Look at the number of votes on both sides and you will see that a larger percentage of republicans voted for it out of the total present than did the dems. Tht form of revisionist history is what makes normal people think that liberals are brain damaged idiots.
Thank you, Steve. I just went back and did some research. You are correct. I made a mistake. I accept that mistake and I own it.
The problem with people like Bob the Liberal is that he automatically assumed that the Democrats were responsible for getting the Civil Rights Act passed and that the Republicans were the obstructionists rather than the other way around. It's ingrained in him that Republicans are evil and Democrats good. If he actually did some research he might find that he's been supporting the wrong people his whole life.
Bob,
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed the Senate with 46 Democrats voting for, 21 against, 27 Republicans voting for, 6 against. The Democratic Liberals do not own the Civil Rights Act, it passed because of Republican coming in overwhelmingly, just like during the Civil War, when Republicans opposed slavery and Democrats sought to uphold and extend its reach. History's a b%^ch sometimes.
I agree that the Democrats don't own Civil Rights and it couldn't have gotten passed without Republican support. I will point out that the original question to this string was it being regarded as a Liberal push, and it was by most accounts.
While Lincoln was an early Republican and did free the slaves via the Emancipation Proclaimation, he also did it as a way to impeded the South, much as the British tried the same tactic during the Revolutionary War.
NY-David
So, do you think the Civil Rights Act improved rights for Americans and peace for the world? The Civio Rights Act had almost nothing to do with racisism and almost everything to do with politics.
Grow up Bob, and develop some understanding of where the world is, has been and is heading.
This situation is not about liberals vs. conservatives; it is about intelligent people making good decisions for our country. Are good decisions being made?
I sent a personal email to Matthew Rayone
As a retired US Army Chief Warrant Officer and the Son of a US Marine who fought on the very island where the flag was raised I wish to say I fell you have lowered the bar on what we Vietnam Vets fell is respect for the US Military.
I visit the Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed military hospital to show my support, please consider a personal visit yourself and see first hand the price payed to allow you to live and work in safety Matt, better yet take a few of your students and fellow teachers with you and look them in the eye and try to explain your use of that picture of our US Marines in combat.
Bob The Liberal, If the shoe fits one must wear it and you can BS all you wish but garbage dressed as education is a liberal standard.
Bob The Liberal
I have countered SDS at UNC Chapel Hill when they attacked the military recruiters office and I must say Matts work rated right along with the best work of the SDS.Bob might you agree that SDS is a very liberal group and many current teachers and administrators are active supporters of SDS ?. I care less for your personal point of view regarding our military and please google my name and you Sir might better understand my personal point of view.
Have a great day and lay off the Liberal PC mental morphine and if it walks like a duck at least understand it a damn duck.
To Bob The Liberal
Something for you to ponder as you dig deep for a stinging response to my comments.
The liberals can understand everything but people who don't understand them.

I'm a retired AF NCO with 28 years service to my country and I find this disgusting. I had a Uncle that served in the Pacific with the Marines in WWII and this disrespects all those that served. Its no wonder our children cannot compete in the real world with this liberal education they are receiving.
A DISGRACE!!!!
"The insinuation is that service members are in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting for McDonald's to have the ability to sell their delicious Big Macs and Quarter Pounders w/ Cheese."
Apparently, the teacher is right.
McChrystal just ordered the closure of the fast food joints in Afghanistan. Why does McChrystal hate America?
Why are there fast food places in Afghanistan if not to spread the consumer lifestyle of America to far off lands? It's not about spreading democracy, it's about grabbing natural resources and opening up new markets.
I am sickened by the way you insult the memory of the men who fought and died on that bloody island so you wouldn't have to speak japanese, and are still free to spout this garbage. My SEVEN most favorite words when it comes to liberal pond scum like you is;trial and conviction followed by firing squad.

CJ,
I really think you missed the point on this. This school is not teaching that our troops are in Iraq and Afghanistan to sell Big Macs. This, as you alluded, is a “graded discussionâ€. What they’ve done is introduce a polarizing photo to stir opinion and emotion, simply a catalyst for a classroom discussion in which students defend their stance on the issue. No opinion is wrong, participation is what matters. It gets kids to think and develop their own ideas instead of being spoon fed. It’s the teachers job to simply guide the discussion and make sure both sides get equal opportunity to defend their ideas. Again no opinion is wrong and results in a negative grade.
In reference to the WWI discussion the previous day, you’re damn right the feelings of the African American community were divided. They were fighting for a country that didn’t treat them as equals. This was before the Civil Rights movement and before the complete integration of American forces. Blacks had to serve in seperate units and ride in Jim Crow cars. Also, WWI ended two years before the ammendment guaranteeing women’s suffrage was ratified. The WWI era was also an era that women were battling for their rights to have an equal voice.
What is so wrong about looking at some of the contentious domestic issues that were occuring at that time? WWI history isn’t confined to the battlefield and fighting Germany.
The objective is to get the students engaged and thinking about the important issues of that time, to take them out of the present and transplant them in the past and participate in a supervised thought provoking discussion.
I really think you and the other commenters on this blog should think a little more before you react hyper-aggressively just from seeing a photo. Also, you have a large audience and maybe should use a little better discretion before you fire up a group of people and suggest they call and complain to a school that has done nothing more than provide a forum for discussion and thought.
So, Lee, what you're saying is there isn't another photo out there that doesn't denigrate our troops that they could use to "stir discussion?" How about a photo of a gay Jesus pissing on John the Baptist? That would be controversial.
Again CJ, I think you’re missing the point. The photo doesn’t denigrate the troops. No one should look at this photo and make the assumption that our soldiers are Pro-McDonald’s agents and mercenaries for burgers and fries.
The point of the photo is to question the motives behind our wars. Are these wars crucial to our national defense? Are there other economic or capitalistic reasons involved? It’s not unpatriotic to ask these questions. It’s not unpatriotic to introduce them in the classroom. In fact it’s one of the most patriotic things we can do. Patriotism comes in many forms. When our government makes the decision to sacrifice the lives of our citizens for a cause, that cause better a good one and the decision to do so better be one of last resort. If anything denigrates the troops, it’s putting such little value on their lives that they are put at risk to further other agendas merely cloaked as national defense. That’s the real issue here, that’s the discussion!
But that’s not your real issue, is it? Your true goal seems to be finding any reason to lash out in a bigoted hostile manner at anyone who doesn’t share your narrow view of what America is. Just read some of the comments of your followers! The thought of some of these chest-thumping “intellectuals†leading America’s education system is terrifying. Is your goal to create a generation that suffers from myopia and a Napoleon complex?
Also, how does the class’ previous WWI discussion relate to this in any way?
As for your other suggested discussion photo, we’re not talking about controversy for controversy’s sake. Of course whatever the topic is, the catalyst (photo) needs to lead to a teaching point and be relevant to the subject. I don’t really think this is something that I should need to clarify for you.
You’ve taken up some good social battles before, but with this it seems you’ve hit low tide.
Lee,
If you are a teacher, then your students are lucky to be taught by you. It is nice to read comments from an educated, well-spoken and unbiased person who gives students the ability to come to their own opinions. After all, one of our most sacred principles is the right to express our thoughts freely.
Oh, George. Also the right to be brainwashed, I guess. So, you wouldn't mind then, if I taught kids that the invasion of Iraq was just and right in an effort to express thoughts freely?
Of course, being from California I guess you would agree with Lee. After all, your state is banning toys from Happy Meals for goodness sake!!
It's not the school's job to tell my children who is right and who is wrong. That would be brainwashing. The school is supposed to teach them to look at the world from different points of view. I want them to learn to decide right and wrong for themselves. And I am all for the teacher saying that, in his opinion, the invasion of Iraq was just and right.
What does being from California have to do with anything? Ronald Reagan was from California. Do you have a problem with him?
No, just people who don't mind public education brainwashing. I think the war in Iraq was just and right too, but I don't want any teachers teaching giving their opinions about it one way or another. I want them to educate my kids. Present the facts and then let THEM decide, free of the educator's influence.
Heh.
I will be out of the office from March 24 through April 4 with no access to email. If you need immediate assistance please contact Dr. Michelle Norell at 703-287-2706. Otherwise, I will reply to all emails when I return. Thank you for your cooperation and patience.
I suspect Mr. Ragone has no idea what an emailstorm is hitting him.
The liberal mother f*cker doesn't want to deal with the results of another stupid liberal's actions. Libs cannot deal with repercussions as a result of their nonsense.
You all seem to be attacking me personally.
Why?
I actually agree with you. Yes, I'm a liberal. And I call myself one. But its really not an accurate label.
Although I never served, due to a severe knee injury in high school, I come from a military family. My grandfather and my uncle served in WW2. My father did a two tours in the Navy just before, and during, Vietnam. My baby brother was in the Army. I have numerous cousins that have or are currently serving. My father's twin sister just retired after 40 years in the Army. My Godson is currently in the Corps, just out of boot.
As CJ will tell you, I have a lot of conservative beliefs. I believe in smaller government. I believe in a strong, vibrant, and leading technology national defense. Among other things.
If you all just want to stoop to such a low level to troll me, set up a message board somewhere, and I'll be glad to go there. Bring it on. I've been doing it for years. Ask Marcus about how I am with something like that, he knows. But don't disrespect the people who have spent their time and money setting this place up.
Please Bob, You are sitting in judgement of those who have seen combat, pack it in Buddy and I think you seem to think you can do a battle of words like a drama queen in a school chat room. I did two tours in Vietnam Bob and have a Bronze Star for my service and I do not ask for, or need your approval for my comments here. I will not feed your ego or need you to feed mine. Google my name Bob.I have stood up for my troops face to face and your point of views fail to win eather my heart or my mind.
Have a great day Bob.
No, you sat in judgment of me. You decided that I was to blame for this whole issue, when what I pointedly said it was disgusting.
I AGREED WITH YOU!
But you decided that since I'm a liberal, you're going to slam me, as if it is my fault. Ask me sometime who I've voted for, you might be surprised.
Oh, and George, thank you for your service to our country. Its people like you that let us have the freedom to even have this discussion.
Peace Bob..Accept a Olive Branch and again, welcome to the Laptops for Wounded Warriors.
PS I would vote for a liberal as President , when will Harry S. Truman be running again ?.
I would be proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with you, any place, any time, any weather to support the troops. Might you wish to stand with me to face those who do not ?.To me its not political , it more about the Americans who fight for freedom and those who pander against them.
Take care Bob..Peace.
This information will be forwarded to the Marine Corps Times and Leatherneck magazine to inform them of the slander of US Marines.
Please plaster the local news media near the "School" and the school PTA. with the news their children are being trained to equate military service with selling hamburgers.
I wait with baited breath for the school administrators to accept my offier to pander this garbage to a Wounded Warrior at Walter Reed.
Excellent, thank you for this. I have sent it to several news outlets, as well as a number of Senators and Representatives, including every single one of South Carolina's.
And George, if they accept, let me know. I wanna video tape that for posterity. Besides, I like watching a good ass kicking.
I ask the school administrator to respond to my offer to meet at Walter Reed to face our Wounded Warriors re..fight and die to sell hamburgers..Waiting with baited breath for a response.
I am sending two more laptops to Walter Reed, two to Camp LeJeune NC and another to Bethesda Naval Hosptial. More will follow ASAP as donations are received GOE is a 501C3 tax free organization and we have no overhead.
"Lets Roll Laptops To Wounded Warriors"
What we do best for our military we always do best..Together.
Bob, I hate to break it to you, buddy, but you are not a liberal. Liberals do not believe in smaller government. Liberals believe government IS the answer. You might be a liberaltarian or libservative, but you are definitely not a liberAL.
You might just be right. I did say I had conservative beliefs. Hell, I voted for Reagan. I just hate having someone's religion shoved down my throat.
The only place religon is a issue to our military is on their Dog Tags and that is important to Graves Registration and the "Holy Joe" who hold their hand as they die.
All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.
Buddha
I was baptised by a Baptist preacher who spent five years in Vietnam as a sniper.
Go Figure Bob.
Have a great day and when I post to you again let us meet in peace and leave the political debate for another place and time.
"Uncle George"
No hard feelings, Uncle George.
I'm just a little sensitive about the whole religion issue.
I'm a Wiccan. And I have a friend who runs a bookstore. I was helping her move some shelves around, and a group of people started up a protest about the store. Including signs that said "Burn the Witch".
About a half hour in, a brick come flying in through the front window. I walk outside to see what was going on, and I have a picket sign attached to a 2×4 slammed into my head. I still carry a scar on my temple from it. Thankfully, my glasses mostly hide it.
So yeah, I'm sorry if I seemed a bit snippy about that.
Bob many Wiccans serve in todays military and they have a special military headstone with the Wiccan designation of religion.
We have a few Wiccan members within the GOE..We never ask what faith you follow , just that you 110% support the US Military.
May I suggest you consider the online handle "Bob The Troop Supporter" ?..Has a very nice ring to it.
Sending a laptop to a Marine Sgt Major who lost both legs in combat.Busy week.
I know all about the Wiccan designation. I remember the fight for it.
I'm considering the handle change to just Bob.
I recommend that you maintain "The Liberal" moniker. The above isn't a correct assumption about what a Liberal truely is. Its all about wanting to try something new. I firmly believe that the Founding Fathers were liberals. Early Americans who wanted us to get involved in WWII against the Germans were decidedly liberal when the more conservative view was to not get involved "over there".
Just a few facts for you. Please don't consume so-called Hollywood Liberals as the same as the rest of us.
I don't care for the picture of the Marines, but I appreciate the teacher wanting to foment discussion and schools should be all about this.
NY-David
Proudly Liberal
I'd hate to tell you how many good people I've talked to who really are conservative in their beliefs about government yet vote Democrat every time. I have a very good black friend who is that way. We've talked for hours, and she and I agree on almost everything. Yet she is pathologically unable to vote for a Republican.
Of course, that might change now that the Democrats are trying to control the people (as one Congresscritter let slip recently.)
I vote for the person I feel will do the best job. I identify as a Democrat, but I'll also vote Republican, Libertarian, Independent, or the Mickey Mouse Party if they'll do a good job.
Although this senate race, I'll be voting Democrat. Here in CT, we have a choice of a wildly popular and extremely respected AG who took on Big Tobacco alone and won, or the CEO of the World Wrestling Federation.
Easy choice there.
Got that right. WWE wins every day.
The choice between a Socialist SOB who seeks to control and has made a name for themselves seeking by pandering to those who want to punish someone because they were too weak to quit a bad habit, and a person who made their wealth by honestly supplying entertainment? Yeah, I'd say that's an easy choice.
Anyone voting for the former, rather than the latter needs professional help.
I used just one example. There are a lot more.
Like 2/week going onto the local radio shows, asking people to call in and telling him their issues so he can help them out. Issues with bad landlords, with local laws, etc. Things he and his office can help with.
That's just another example.
Or do we want someone who's husband goes on tv and brags about his own semen and mocks God?
Blumenthal of "When I served in Vietnam" fame. Oops, I "misspoke". I looked it up in the thesaurus. Misspoke is not a synonym for lied.
Here's my letter to School Board:
Can you help me get this to the appropriate person on the School board? The favor of your reply is most appreciated.
In the daily news I read, I have come across a number of references to an image used by an 11th grade English teacher at Langley High School. I feel that I cannot let this go without expressing my displeasure. Why an English teacher would use such an offensive image is beyond me, in a class that was supposed to be about the depression.
Please know that have also contacted my dear friend, Norman Hatch about this as well. He is Northern Virginia resident and combat cameraman who served at Iwo Jima and Tarawa. Ironically, he will also be featured on ABC news tonight as man of the week. Perhaps this teacher could focus on the real stories of WWII or the Depression instead an agenda-driven highly offensive image.
You should know that in addition to this being all over the internet, I have spoke directly with one of the parents involved, so I know my information to be quite credible.
I have attached the image and the links as an FYI.

I sent this email…
Principal Ragone,
How dare you to not only allow the sullying of a sacred image of our soldiers sacrifice, but to also mangle history so badly that it might have originated at one of our hated enemies schools. Why is it that so much ignorance seems to come from our educational system? The person who came up with this skewed history isn't fit to flip burgers, let alone teach our children. When teaching about WW1 and WW2 why not ask an expert in the history of war to drop by and lend a hand? Contact your local VFW, VVA, IVA, or MOPH chapter for a volunteer. Many of us study history with a passion you would not recognize. Many of us actually do volunteer to teach classes on specific areas of war history, and it's a history of experience and of compassion which delves into more than dates, names, and statistics.
"fighting for the right to sell Big Macs and Quarter Pounders…". How dare you equate the giving of our lives and our blood in the quest for freedom for all Americans to a mere transaction for food. Are all of Langley High teachers cowards and scoundrels bereft of any sense of truth, honor, and patriotism?
A bunch of will be riding up to DC on Memorial Day week. Would you like for us to stop and pay our respects in person…maybe teach a class or two?
Yes, I did address this to Principal Ragone, but after this fiasco gets out you may be glad to get a gig slapping burgers on buns at the nearby Cholesterol Counter. Good riddance.
Spelling ok?
Great! What a craptastic view of the sacrifice that was made by WWII veterans.
As Fairfax county ,Va. is the U.N. of the midatlantic, this no surprise!!!!! Next on the list is Montgomery county Md. Ironically , these are the two most affluent counties in the country (per capita)and used to have the best education system in the U.S. Heres an interesting note: After 9-11 the govt. of Saudi Arabia pumped millions of dollars into the area (Wash metro) for the construction of islamic schools(madrasas) and community centers (terror training centers).Do we really need to be surprised at this ? Hell no! We need to be outraged!!!!
My grandfather landed at Normandy and fought all the way across France and into Germany. I'm pretty sure I dont recall him saying it was "a war of capitalist oppression." That school should be ashamed.
Bob,
With all due respect you may want to recheck you "facts." It was the REPUBLICAN party that lead the charge on both Cival Rights AND the Voting Rights act!
Why is it the left is always trying to rewrite history to make themselves out to be the good guys?
In my world we have a saying: The good I do is never remembered, the bad is never forgotten.
Let me know when you are ready to learn the truth about why the Kennedy's are such strong advocates for the downtrodden. You remember them, Teddy brought us HMOs; how did that work out for ya?
OK, Uncle George and Bob the Liberal, let us get something straight. I am a "Classic liberal" like those that started our Great Republic. The wordhas come to mean something different in 230 years. There are stillsome "Classic Liberals" like me, I do not give a crap about your religion or lach there of, nor your color, last name, or choice of beverage. I only care if I trust you behind me. What we have today is a large group of Pseudo "Liberals," who wish to go back to a system of nibility to control the serfs and inflect their will on others. Not that I know everything, but did do 25 in the army, and also am a retired College professor. Bob, if you are a true "liberal" try to help Uncle George get more lap tops and go film some of the "Pseudo Liberals" insulting our dead and wounded brothers and sisters in need. George, put another check in the mail today. You should have it by Monday.
Charlie
Thanks Brother Charles..I found the Marine Sgt Major Wounded Warrior, his laptop will arrive Monday at Walter Reed. I also found my first Navy Wounded Warrior, his will also arrive Monday..Great week for our wounded.
Not Cool!
Having served in two branches of service, interservice banter is well understood and accepted in good humor. This however, is a disgrace and and insult.
That being said, is there any reason for the star inside the square, (an up to date symbol of the Army)?
Mike Shearin, Sgt.

Novel approach my friend. Imagine…making students think! I grew up in the home of a "Depression Era" farmer and school teacher. Dad always said, "Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see…and NEVER forget that HISTORY is propaganda put out by the winning side."
Now…in teaching these lessons to us one included a trip to Auschwitz. Dad had told us there was an Olympic sized pool INSIDE the residents camp. Not outside for the guards or the general staff…but fully inside the encampment. As we took the tour Dad asked questions regarding the number of alleged persecutions and if it were not true that the Allies had completely cut off supplies and thousands died of disease and starvation. Was cremation not a necessary effort to manage disease?
When Dad asked about the location of the pool its very existence was denied. As the tour group moved along Dad took us outside and we boldly crossed barriers that read Eintritt Verboten! (Entrance Forbidden)…and gained entrance to an area not visible along any of the public ways…and sure enough…an Olympic Size Pool in the middle of what was originally the very interior of the encampment. Explain that?
Dad also showed us time and again census counts and other statistics obtained worldwide that indicated there was not SIX MILLION JEWS in all of Europe, Russia and the Mideast…let alone the possibility of them being exterminated. Dad also showed us photos in different books which claimed to be photos of mass graves or shooting atrocities…interestingly enough…the photos had the same bodies from different angles and captions showing them to be in varying different places. Propaganda put out by the winning side?
Dad did give us pause to question, analyze, THINK and be wary. Everything is not as it seems.
The point is…I think it is a great tool to teach and/or challenge students to think outside the box if you will. With all the tools available today to brainwash the "sheeple" they need to learn to think. Emails, Steven Spielberg movie productions, photo enhancements etc. can create anything…even Moon Landings.
As a Viet Nam Era decorated veteran I do not condone mocking our Armed Forces or veterans. I do not condone anything unpatriotic. However…making children think is a positive. I do not deny atrocities were committed in this and every war. However HISTORY is still propaganda put out by the winning side. Just as NEWS is whatever the "In the tank for Obama media wants it to be!"
This photo represents a defining moment in our nation's history, and tampering with it or using it for purposes other than to honor our men and women in uniform, both past and present, is not only insulting but the epitome of disgrace.
FYI
I am a proud son of WW2 Marine veteran, his brother also a WW2 vet (Army, but we loved him still)Both my brothers served in Vietnam. I tied to follow my brothers into the Air Force, but Da grabbed the phone from me and screamed at the recruiter I'm not having any more sons in the goddam airforce. Growing up in New Jersey (the homeland, land of Bruce Springsteen) I learned about history in my HS library.
I am a life long proud Irish American Democrat, I fly our flag every day, I consider myself a proud liberal Democrat.
I have taught history in HS.
So be clear
I love my country, my family has defended it since the revolution.
There is nothing remotely conflicting me in my love of country and my liberal outlook on life
I don't appreciate the use of the IWO image, but the teacher has a right to do it…
Keeping to topic here, I have a bigger problem if this picture were put out to a large bill-board or a permanent place. I don't have a problem with the teacher using it as a teaching lesson.
To all those on this site getting their panties in a bunch about this, you have to look at all sides of the issue.
IBM made a huge foray into Post-War Europe by making great computers as well as getting preference as a company on the Victor's side and Marshall Plan funding. Getting McDonald's into many countries brings in a lot of money into our coffers. I don't see a problem with that. I think its wise to understand the business end in all its aspects.
Let's let the teachers teach and couple it with your own teaching at home.

I was there the day she had shown this image and honestly before talking to other people around me I was kind of shocked that she was laughing at it like it was a joke. Yet she gets very serious when she shows us stories from the internet of the Tuskegee Airmen in WWI. Both of these groups of soldiers were brave and I honor them, but if i showed a picture in her class of them with a large Mcdonald's banner hanging behind their warplanes like an advertisement, satirizing the Tuskegee Airmen she would likely send me to the school's office or give me an honor code violation.
